2025 Year in Review

Built on Legacy.

Wired for the
Future.

For 25 years, Cleveland Clinic Innovations has been turning
insights into solutions that improve patients’ lives.

Born out of a vision to bring the discoveries of our renowned scientists, researchers and clinicians to the world, we’ve evolved into a commercialization partner that matches each opportunity with the right model, the right partners and the right capital. We’re building a future where transformative breakthroughs reach patients faster—powered by Cleveland Clinic’s world-class reputation and innovative healthcare ecosystem that combines clinical expertise, research capabilities and commercialization infrastructure.

A Letter from the Chief of Cleveland Clinic Innovations

2025 has been a defining year for Cleveland Clinic Innovations, demonstrating how far we’ve come in building a comprehensive, integrated innovation engine with global reach.

Our “team of teams” guides technologies from initial conversations through proof of concept, development and deal execution, and the results speak for themselves. Startups in our portfolio are securing regulatory clearances and raising significant funding. We’re working with strategic partners who share our vision for solving healthcare’s greatest unmet needs—and they’re validating, refining and generating evidence alongside Cleveland Clinic clinicians in ways that reduce risk and accelerate time to market. Partners have a clear, reliable framework for collaboration.

In 2025, we saw artificial intelligence make the leap from pilot projects to patient impact. We’ve deployed clinically validated AI in high stakes areas including oncology, where treatments are limited, and in sepsis detection and care, where accuracy and speed directly affect outcomes.

The London Innovation Hub was introduced to our ecosystem this year, further expanding our global footprint. Our collaborations with Khosla Ventures and other investors work in both directions, creating connections between innovators, clinical expertise and capital across North America, Europe and the Middle East.

As we look toward 2026, we remain committed to targeting healthcare challenges and diseases with the greatest unmet need. I’m grateful for our deeply experienced Innovations team and the researchers, clinicians, inventors and strategic partners who make our work possible.

Stay connected throughout the year.

Artificial Intelligence and Precision Medicine Where It Matters Most

...We emphasize both the importance of AI to our strategic vision and the urgency of practical applications that can benefit our clinicians and patients today.

—Rohit Chandra, PhD
Executive Vice President & Chief Digital Officer, Cleveland Clinic

This year, we deployed clinically validated AI to target diseases with the greatest unmet need.

  • Sepsis care and detection, where accuracy and speed directly affect outcomes.

  • Oncology, opening doors to predict patient responses to treatments when options are limited.

  • Neurology, transforming brain wave monitoring from an hours-long manual review process to detecting changes in the brain’s electrical activity within seconds.

We're also tackling operational challenges like identifying patients for clinical trials and using ambient listening to reduce caregiver burnout.

Our clinical expertise, data infrastructure and implementation capabilities allow AI to move from proof-of-concept into standard practice, positioning Cleveland Clinic as a de-risking partner for collaborators who share our goals of solving healthcare’s greatest unmet needs.

As we test and implement new technology, we remain deliberate and uncompromising in our commitment to patient safety.

Innovation Without Borders

Innovations backed by the world’s #2 hospital and deployed across a global healthcare system

Cleveland Clinic’s global infrastructure provides the reach needed for clinical validation at scale. With operations spanning three continents, strategic collaborators may have the opportunity to validate, refine and generate evidence in diverse patient populations and varied regulatory environments.

In 2025, Cleveland Clinic Innovations engaged in notable international collaborations:

  • With LifeArc (United Kingdom), to address unmet medical needs in areas including cancer by developing monoclonal antibody-based therapeutics.

  • With RAFARM S.A. (Greece), to develop and commercialize a new ophthalmic therapy addressing corneal scarring.

In 25 years, we’ve evolved from a medical-device-focused operation into a balanced, global innovation engine advancing therapeutics, digital health, and AI.

25 Year Innovation Engine

From Medical Devices to Artificial Intelligence: 25 Years of Cleveland Clinic Innovations

When Cleveland Clinic Innovations began in 2000, our body of work centered largely on medical devices and inventions targeting specific diagnoses and conditions. Today, our medical device portfolio remains strong, yet we’ve shifted into a new era that reimagines the whole health journey through innovation. We’ve expanded to include digital health, therapeutics and diagnostics. We’re developing and commercializing technologies that streamline hospital operations and reduce costs, accelerate treatments and target patients for specific interventions.

It goes back to people, processes and systems. Our team-of-teams model includes separate groups for sourcing ideas, assessing them, developing them, and handling licensing deals. Each group has different skill sets, so we can optimize performance at each stage. We have processes that track technology development, and we use a lean, outcomes-driven approach. We stay focused on what matters most: improving outcomes and operational efficiencies.

Our Operating Model

The Future of Healthcare Since 1921

Long before Cleveland Clinic Innovations was officially established as the hospital’s commercialization partner, Cleveland Clinic has been a place for innovation and medical breakthroughs. Since its founding, innovations that started here have changed medicine:

  • Discovery of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that affects body and mood (1948)

  • Pioneering “stopped heart” surgery (1956) and coronary artery bypass surgery (1967)

  • Development of coronary angiography to reveal artery blockages (1958)

  • Discovery of a brain-mapping technique to pinpoint epileptic seizures (1980)

  • Leading-edge left atrial appendage device introduced (2006)*

  • First U.S. near-total face transplant performed (2008)*

  • First deep brain stimulation for stroke recovery performed (2017)*

  • Development of a vaccine to prevent deadly triple-negative breast cancer (2021)*
